Abortion

Considering Abortion?

As with any other medical procedure, it’s important that you are fully informed of the health implications and associated risks. There are several different types of abortions, including the abortion pill such as Plan B or RU 486, and surgical abortions, which will be more invasive. Abortion procedures can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000. We can provide you with additional information if you still have questions regarding abortion procedures. We are here to help!

Your First Step

Before you consider your options, you will want a pregnancy test to confirm for pregnancy. We offer a free self-administered pregnancy test. If you are pregnant and still considering an abortion, our staff can help you understand the facts and risks associated with each abortion procedure.

THIS CENTER DOES NOT PERFORM OR REFER FOR ABORTIONS.

We have information and resources on the important medical risks of abortion as referenced in the brochure, “If You Are Pregnant” pursuant to the Women's Right to Know Act (MN Statutes section 145.4241-145.4249).

Different Types of Abortion Procedures

Plan B
Plan B, often called “the morning after pill,” is a high-dosage of the birth control pill that women take 72 hours after sex. It ends a pregnancy by preventing an egg from being released, interfering with a woman’s menstrual cycle or preventing the egg from effectively implanting in the uterus. There are side effects associated with Plan B including nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, headaches, and vomiting.

RU 486
RU 486 is a two-part pill series that causes a medical abortion. The first pill you take will cut off the blood flow to the baby and the second will induce labor. The second pill will cause severe cramps, bleeding, nausea, and vomiting. Even after taking the two pills, many women will still need a surgical abortion to effectively end the pregnancy and remove all the baby from the uterus.

Surgical Abortions
The most common surgical abortion procedure is the Manual/Vacuum Aspiration procedure. A syringe or vacuum is used to suck the contents of the pregnancy from your uterine wall. Because this is an invasive procedure, you should expect to experience side effects and symptoms including cramping, nausea, sweating, and faintness.
The Dilation and Evacuation procedure combines vacuum aspiration, dilation and curettage, and forceps. During this procedure, you are given a sedative and an injection in your cervix, while forceps are used to remove the baby.  A curette is then used to scrape the lining of the uterus while suctioning out any remnants of the pregnancy.

Abortion Risks

Just like any other medical procedure, there are associated risks with having an abortion. Those risks include heavy bleeding, infection, damage to the cervix, damage to the uterus or uterine lining, damage to other internal organs, sepsis (total body infection caused by RU486), loss of future fertility and death. When you visit Abba Pregnancy Resource Center, we can give you information regarding abortion and the health risks associated with each procedure. No matter what you choose, we are here to help guide you through this process in a caring environment.
